A crane-shaped castle on a hill

Karatsu Castle was built by Terazawa Hirotaka, a retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, based on materials from Nagoya Castle, and was completed over seven years from 1602.

With the keep as the crane's head and the sides as its wings, the castle is said to resemble a flying crane. From the keep, Karatsu city, the sea and the coastline spread out before you.

Maizuru Park with cherry and wisteria blossoms

Maizuru Park around the castle has hundreds of Someiyoshino cherry and wisteria trees, filling the area with blossoms in spring.

At night the castle is illuminated, offering a different atmosphere from the daytime.

Good to know before your visit

As the castle stands on a hill, there are many slopes and stairs. There are handrails on the way to the keep and turrets, but the stairs are very steep with high steps. The keep can only be entered by stairs, so wheelchair users cannot visit alone.

Restrooms are available in Maizuru Park and at 2 locations on the 1st floor of Karatsu Castle, with diaper changing facilities and baby chairs. Strollers are not available for rent. Pets are allowed everywhere except inside the keep.

※ Blooming times vary from year to year.
