In this 30-minute experience at Mekari Shrine, a shrine with over 1,800 years of history right on the Kanmon Strait, you paint a traditional papier-mâché pufferfish charm yourself. In Kitakyushu, pufferfish is called "Fuku," which sounds like the Japanese word for happiness, so it is considered a symbol that brings good luck. Paint traditional wish-bearing motifs with brush pens, and once finished, your charm receives a Shinto purification (Oharai) to become your own lucky charm. All tools are provided, so anyone from children to adults can enjoy it easily, and you can take your finished charm home as a souvenir.
Mekari Shrine is a peaceful sanctuary with over 1,800 years of history. Located at the northernmost tip of Kyushu right beside the Kanmon Strait, it offers open ocean views and a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
Paint a white papier-mâché (hariko) pufferfish with easy-to-use brush pens. Choose traditional motifs that carry your wishes; the activity takes about 30 minutes. At 5.3 cm × 6.5 cm, it's a cute palm-sized charm.
Examples of design motifs. Choose from traditional motifs for wishes such as health, long life and prosperity, as well as motifs related to Mekari Shrine and the local area.
When you finish painting, your charm receives a Shinto purification (Oharai) at the shrine and becomes your own lucky charm. Take a photo with it framed by the torii or stone steps, with the Kanmon Strait, Kanmon Bridge and passing ships behind.
