Meet your English-speaking guide at the Dhobi Ghat viewpoint and spend about 30 minutes walking around the laundry. Clothes from all over Mumbai come to this open-air laundry, which has been operating for over a century, and hundreds of washermen (dhobis) work in shifts all day to return them fresh and clean. During the tour, your guide explains the history of Dhobi Ghat and its significance to the city.

Watch the washing done by hand

Some families use machines, but most of the work is still done by hand. One person sorts clothes by color and type, another beats them in the washing pens, and someone else hangs them on lines to dry before pressing them with a large charcoal iron. There is also a separate area where water is boiled to wash laundry from hospitals.
