Meet Mumbai's dabbawalas
at Churchgate
Meet your guide at Churchgate Station and spend about 30 minutes with the dabbawalas. 'Dabbawala' means 'box carrier' in Hindi: they deliver home-cooked lunch boxes (dabbas) to offices and return the empty boxes to homes. About 5,000 dabbawalas deliver around 130,000 lunch boxes every day, using the same method for nearly 120 years.
Ride a local train to Dhobi Ghat
Take a local Mumbai train with your guide for about 10 minutes to Dhobi Ghat next to Mahalaxmi Station. Here, washermen known as dhobis wash clothes from Mumbai's hotels and hospitals in the open air, in rows of concrete wash pens, each with its own flogging stone. Walk around for about 30 minutes.
Walk Dharavi's lanes and workshops
Take the train again to Dharavi and explore for about 2 hours. Formed in 1882 during the British Raj, Dharavi is a large slum in the heart of Mumbai where many goods are made in very small spaces. Pass leather workshops, pottery, soap making, bakeries, dyeing, plastic and cooking-oil can recycling, schools, hospitals, homes and the market to see residents' daily life up close.
