Fukuoka Hakata Maiko & Matcha Tea Ceremony Experience (Dance Performance / Maiko Makeover Options)

Meet Hakata maiko culture
in a traditional space near Kushida Shrine

The experience takes place at Hakata Geidokoro Wanoka (はかた芸処わ乃桂) near Kushida Shrine. It runs in small groups of up to 8 people, so you can interact closely with the maiko. With the help of an interpreter, you will learn about the culture and history of Hakata maiko and gain a deeper understanding of traditional Japanese culture.

Depending on the option, the experience lasts from 30 minutes to 3 hours, and it ends back at the meeting point.

Feel Japanese hospitality through a matcha tea ceremony

Enjoy a traditional matcha latte and experience the spirit of hospitality behind the Japanese tea ceremony. The matcha tea ceremony option is a tea-ceremony-only experience of about 30 minutes and does not include the maiko experience.

Take photos with a maiko and transform into one

With the Maiko Photo Shoot & Matcha Ceremony option, take photos with a maiko and make your own matcha. During the experience, you can also create special memories with unique trick art photos.

The Hakata Maiko Makeover option is an experience of about 3 hours in which you put on traditional maiko makeup and costume and become a maiko yourself.

Enjoy a traditional dance performance with Hakata sake

With the Dance Performance & Tea Ceremony option, watch a traditional Japanese dance performance and enjoy a tea ceremony. You can experience Hakata's traditional culture all at once through tea, conversation, photos and dance.

The Local Sake Daytime Drinking Plan lets you enjoy local Hakata sake while watching traditional Japanese dance and a matcha tea ceremony. It includes tastings of three kinds of sake, one small seasonal dish, matcha and traditional Japanese sweets.
