This is a small-group walking tour (up to 10 people) of the historic district of Yame, a small town in southern Fukuoka Prefecture, with an English-speaking guide for about 2 hours. Along old merchant streets lined with white plaster walls and tiled roofs, visit the historic Sakaiya residence, Fukushima Hachimangu Shrine and the Yokomachi Machiya Exchange Center, a restored Edo-period sake brewery. Learn about traditional crafts such as handmade paper, lanterns and Buddhist altars and about Yame's tea culture, and experience the quiet everyday life of Yame, different from Japan's busier tourist towns.
The tour starts near the Yame Traditional Crafts Museum. Your guide explains how this small town developed around crafts, commerce and tea, along with traditional crafts such as handmade paper, lanterns and Buddhist altars passed down for generations.
At the well-preserved Sakaiya residence, get a glimpse of the lifestyle and architecture of a wealthy merchant family. Stroll the surrounding streets and admire traditional details such as wooden facades, tiled roofs and white plaster walls.
Visit Fukushima Hachimangu, a shrine closely tied to the local community, and hear about local traditions and festivals. Then walk through the Yame Fukushima district, lined with merchant houses from the Edo, Meiji, Taisho and early Showa periods, and feel the atmosphere of a living neighborhood where tea shops, traditional stores and workshops remain part of daily life. There are also photo stops among white-walled buildings and narrow lanes.
At the Yokomachi Machiya Exchange Center, a restored late Edo-period sake brewery, learn more about local history and Yame's tea culture. The tour ends around the former Yame District Office area.
※ Depending on opening hours and the pace of the tour, your guide may introduce places where you can taste or buy Yame tea.
