Encountering the works of sculpture and woodblock printing craftsmen,
Ukiyo-e Art Museum
Have you ever come across Ukiyo-e artworks inserted into restaurant walls, postcards, or clothing and other props? Ukiyo-e works refer to Japanese genre paintings from the 17th century to the early 20th century, and the Ukiyo-e Museum displays works by many Ukiyo-e masters, including Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige.
This is a must-visit place for those who are interested in traditional Japanese art. At the museum , you can find beautiful works painted between 1603 and 1868 depicting everything from typical Japanese landscapes and nature to sumo wrestling.
Why we should go
The Ukiyo-e Art Museum is located inside an arcade in the Shinsaibashi-suji shopping district, which is crowded with shoppers. It is located about a 5-minute walk from Osaka Metro Shinsaibashi Station. It's great to be able to see up close works from the Edo period to the Meiji period, mainly by painters such as Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Kitagawa Utamaro, and Higashisai Sharaku. The only place that has a large collection of Kansai Yukari's works is the Ukiyo-e Museum.
Meet Katsushika Hokusai Tomitake 36
Katsushika Hokusai's 36 Views of Tomitake, "Kanagawa Okinami" and "Kaifu Kaisei" are on permanent display! In fact, just being able to see this work is reason enough to visit the Ukiyo-e Museum.
You can buy works from the Edo period
One of the popular things about the museum shop is that you can directly purchase folded ukiyo-e prints from the Edo period. You can actually purchase works ranging from around 10,000 yen to hundreds of thousands of yen.
