Meet the works of sculptors and woodblock printmakers.
Ukiyoe Museum
Have you ever seen Ukiyo-e works inserted into restaurant walls, postcards, or clothing and other props? Ukiyo-e works refer to Japanese genre paintings from the 17th to early 20th centuries, and the Ukiyo-e Museum exhibits works by many Ukiyo-e masters, including Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige.
This is a must-see for those interested in traditional Japanese art. The museum features beautiful works depicting everything from typical Japanese landscapes and nature to sumo, painted between 1603 and 1868.
Why we should go
The Ukiyo-e Museum is located in the arcade of the Shinsaibashisuji shopping street, which is crowded with shoppers. It is about a 5-minute walk from Osaka Metro Shinsaibashi Station. It is great because you can see up close the works of artists such as Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Kitagawa Utamaro, and Higashisuisai Sharaku from the Edo to Meiji periods. The Ukiyo-e Museum is the only place that has a large collection of works by Kansai Yukari.
Meet Katsushika Hokusai Tomitake 36
Katsushika Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Tomitake, "Okinami, Kanagawa" and "Kaifu Kaisei" are on permanent display! In fact, just being able to see this work is enough of a reason to visit the Ukiyo-e Museum.
You can buy Edo period works
One of the popular things about the museum shop is that you can buy folded ukiyo-e prints from the Edo period. You can buy works that cost anywhere from around 10,000 yen to several hundred thousand yen.
