About the Host

Highlights

Try kintsugi, the traditional Japanese craft of mending broken pottery with gold, in Shibuya, Tokyo. Following step-by-step guidance from the instructor, you repair ceramic pieces using traditional kintsugi techniques and decorate them with golden details to create your own piece. You will also learn about the philosophy of kintsugi, which values imperfection and resilience, and its place in Japanese aesthetics. All materials and tools are provided, so beginners can join with ease, and you can take your finished plate home as a souvenir.

Program

Learn the traditional Japanese craft of kintsugi
in the heart of Shibuya

Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese repair technique that highlights the cracks in broken pottery with gold instead of hiding them, giving the piece a new kind of beauty. During the session, you will hear about the cultural meaning of kintsugi, its connection to Japanese aesthetics, and how this centuries-old craft still inspires people today.

Repair pottery and decorate it in gold with the instructor

Guided step by step by the instructor, you carefully repair ceramic pieces using traditional kintsugi techniques, then decorate them with golden details to turn the damaged areas into a one-of-a-kind work of art. No previous experience is needed, and all materials and tools are provided so you can focus calmly on your work.

Take your finished plate home as a souvenir

You will complete one kintsugi piece during the experience, using a standard plate provided as part of the workshop. Your finished kintsugi plate is yours to take home as a souvenir. An extra ceramic plate for a second piece (upgrade) is not included.
