This workshop teaches you shodo, the art of Japanese calligraphy, in Asakusa, a historic district of Tokyo. An experienced local instructor shows you how to handle the brush and ink and teaches basics such as stroke order and balance. After trying both a traditional brush and a modern fude pen, you create your own calligraphy artwork with a favorite character or word to take home. The experience is designed for beginners, so no prior experience is needed.

Learn shodo, Japanese calligraphy,
in Asakusa
The Japanese calligraphy (shodo) workshop takes place at Tokyo Tourist Lounge Asakusa in the heart of Asakusa. An experienced local instructor teaches you how to use the brush and ink, along with the basics of stroke order, balance and expression.
Practice the basics with a traditional brush and a fude pen

With guidance from the instructor, practice basic calligraphy techniques such as brush control and stroke order. Besides the traditional brush, you also use a modern fude pen for greater precision. The workshop is held in a small group, so you receive individual guidance and can learn comfortably at your own pace.
Complete your own artwork to take home

Once you have practiced the basics, choose your favorite character or word and complete your own calligraphy artwork. Take it home as a special souvenir of your time in Japan.
※ The workshop lasts 1 to 1.5 hours.
