See the 41-meter bronze
reclining Buddha at Nanzoin
Meet your driver-guide in Tenjin or in front of Hakata Station and ride the van for about 45 minutes to Nanzoin. Spend about 45 minutes touring the grounds with your guide, learning about the temple's importance in Japanese Buddhism and admiring up close the 41-meter bronze reclining Buddha, which depicts the Buddha entering nirvana. You will also hear the stories behind the carvings and statues found throughout the grounds.
Learn about the Sasaguri pilgrimage, a sacred route linking 88 Buddhist sites, and its meaning in local tradition. Before heading to the next stop, enjoy a light snack or green tea at a shop near the temple.
Pay your respects to the god of learning
at Dazaifu Tenmangu

During the roughly 45-minute van ride, hear stories about the history of Dazaifu, the political and cultural center of the Heian period. At Dazaifu Tenmangu, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, explore the grounds with your guide for about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Pass through the vermilion torii, stroll the gardens where plum blossoms, Michizane's symbol, bloom, and take part in traditional customs such as praying or writing a wish on an ema (wooden plaque).
Enjoy lunch and Dazaifu treats
on the approach street

Have lunch for about 45 minutes at a nearby restaurant and taste local dishes such as Hakata ramen or freshly grilled eel. Walk the lively approach street, try local treats such as umegae mochi filled with red bean paste and browse for souvenirs.
Depending on the schedule, you may also spend about 1 hour at the nearby Kyushu National Museum, which displays artifacts showing Japan's cultural exchange with Asia. After the tour, the van takes about 75 minutes to drop you off in Tenjin or in front of Hakata Station.
