At a studio in Makishi, Naha, create your own shisa, the guardian lion-dog that protects Okinawa. Guided by a local artisan, you can choose either to sculpt a three-dimensional shisa yourself or to paint a pre-made shisa in the colors you like. Before you start, you'll learn about the meaning of shisa in Okinawan folklore as guardians of homes and communities. Painted shisa are baked on site, so you can take your finished piece home the same day.

Start with the story of shisa,
Okinawa's guardian lions
First, learn about the cultural significance of shisa in Okinawan folklore and their role as guardians of homes and communities. Then, depending on the option you booked, begin sculpting or painting your shisa.
Sculpt a 3D shisa with an artisan

If you choose the shisa making option, you'll sculpt a three-dimensional shisa yourself using traditional Ryukyu materials. Under the guidance of a skilled instructor who shares techniques passed down through generations, you'll shape your very own shisa.
Paint a shisa in your own colors

If you choose a painting option (medium or large), you'll decorate a pre-shaped shisa with a variety of colors, drawing inspiration from traditional patterns or your own creativity. Once finished, your painted shisa is baked on site for about 15 minutes so you can take it home the same day.
At the end of the session, admire everyone's creations and learn more about the materials used in this beloved Okinawan craft and the stories behind them. The experience ends at the studio.
※ Only the activity of the option you booked (sculpting or painting) is included.
