A day tour by bus from Tokyo Station or Shinjuku to Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture. Visit Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, and enjoy the views of Irohazaka, a mountain road with 48 hairpin turns, from the bus window. You will also see Lake Chuzenji, 1,269 m above sea level, and Kegon Falls, one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls, where water drops about 99 m, all in one day. An English- and Japanese-speaking guide accompanies the tour, and round-trip bus transport makes the journey easy.
The bus departs at 8:00 from the Marunouchi North Exit of JR Tokyo Station and at 8:30 from in front of Tokyo Mode Gakuen in Shinjuku, heading to Nikko. With a guide providing commentary in English and Japanese, you will visit Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Irohazaka, Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls in turn, then return to your departure point.
Nikko Toshogu is the head shrine of all Toshogu shrines, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo shogunate, and was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. It is Nikko's signature attraction, famous for its intricate wooden architecture and lavish decorations.
You will stay about 3 hours, including lunch time. Lunch is on your own, and the shrine admission (adults and high school students 1,600 yen, elementary and junior high school students 550 yen) must be paid separately on site.
Irohazaka, one of the "100 Most Beautiful Roads in Japan," is an approx. 15.8 km mountain road that runs from central Nikko up to Lake Chuzenji and Okunikko. It has 48 hairpin turns counting both the uphill and downhill routes, and you will enjoy the scenery from the bus window without getting off.
Enjoy about 30 minutes of lake views at Lake Chuzenji in Nikko National Park. Next, spend about 50 minutes at Kegon Falls, one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls, where water from Lake Chuzenji drops about 99 m.
The elevator down to the lower observation deck (adults 600 yen, elementary school students 400 yen, preschool children free) is not included and must be purchased separately on site if you wish to use it.
