Where Can You Go with the JR Northern Kyushu Rail Pass?

This pass allows you to take JR trains (local trains, limited express trains, Kyushu Shinkansen, Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen) from Fukuoka's Hakata Station to Beppu, Oita, Kumamoto, and even Nagasaki and Sasebo. So, if you're planning a trip to Beppu Onsen, exploring the small city of Nagasaki, or traveling to Sasebo to visit the Huis Ten Bosch theme park, this pass is very convenient.

The JR Northern Kyushu Rail Pass allows unlimited rides on most JR lines for a set period. You can choose between a 3-day or 5-day pass for the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass.

Available Train Information:
- Unlimited use of JR lines, Shinkansen, limited express, and local trains throughout Northern Kyushu
- Pass for short-term foreign visitors only

The trains you can board are those operating in the Kumamoto/Misumi and northern Oita areas, and you can use the following four:
1. Local train
2. Limited express train
3. Kyushu Shinkansen (Hakata to Kumamoto)
4. Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen (Takeo Onsen to Nagasaki)

Do I Have to Use the 3-Day/5-Day Pass Consecutively?

The JR Northern Kyushu Rail Pass is available for 3 days or 5 days, and both are valid for consecutive days only. In other words, if you first use it on January 1st, the 3-day pass will expire on January 3rd, and the 5-day pass will expire on January 5th. You cannot skip days in between.

Introducing the Trains You Can Ride in Detail

With the JR Northern Kyushu Rail Pass, you can use both reserved and non-reserved seats on all Shinkansen (Mizuho, Sakura, Tsubame, Kamome) within the specified operating area. In addition, you can use both reserved and non-reserved seats on all limited express trains and all local trains within the specified operating area.

However, the JR Kyushu Rail Pass does not allow you to board the Shinkansen between Hakata and Kokura, which is part of the Sanyo Shinkansen operated by JR West!

How to Reserve a Reserved Seat

You can use the train reserved seat pre-booking service through the JR Kyushu website JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking.
* Reservations can be made before exchanging (issuing) the physical pass.
* Usage fee: D&S train (sightseeing train) → 1,500 yen, general limited express → 1,000 yen (per seat)
* Child fare is half the adult fare.
* For the limited express '36 Plus 3 (36ぷらす3)', the fare varies depending on the section.
* Reserved seats can be pre-booked from 10:00 AM one month before the boarding date.
* The reserved seat pre-booking fee will be paid directly by credit card when you reserve your seat on the JR Kyushu website.
