The oldest zoo in Taiwan,
Hsinchu Zoo
Established in 1936, Hsinchu Zoo is the oldest zoo in Taiwan and turned 86 years old this year. After many years, it was finally reopened in 2019 and has now become a popular attraction. Purchase your tickets in advance on WAUG for a lower price than on-site.
Meet the animals up close and explore the park's five most popular attractions, including the historic 'Elephant Gate,' 'Hippo Lele,' 'Bengal Tiger's House,' 'Big Bunker,' and 'Forest Kitchen.' Let's introduce them one by one below!

A long history in just one gate?
'Elephant Gate'
The children's playground in Hsinchu Park officially opened in 1936, and the elephant and lion statues at the entrance were also completed. This Elephant Gate was designed by a Japanese designer, referencing the gate of Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Germany.
When the zoo was renovated in 2019, the team peeled off layers of paint to find the most authentic color of the 'Elephant Gate.' After peeling off 13 layers, they were able to reveal the most primitive turquoise color of the elephant's head. Even now, many people cherish the memories by taking pictures with the Elephant Gate.
Do you know Hippo Lele?

Hippo Lele is the second must-see place after entering through the Elephant Gate. Hippo Lele, called the mascot of Hsinchu Zoo, has a special ultra-low glass observation window for children, forming the 'cutest skyline' of about 120-130cm. You can easily see the cute hippos shaking their heads or sunbathing in the sand pit, and you don't have to worry about the children's view, so you can enjoy the view with peace of mind.
Visit the Bengal Tiger's House

Bengal tigers have become an endangered species due to their beautiful fur, with less than 4,000 remaining worldwide. Meet the Bengal tiger twins up close. You can also see the orangutans and bears next door. The number of Bengal tigers currently being raised is three times that of the wild, and we are doing our best to breed and protect them as they are endangered.
Bunker for children

The Hsinchu Park sand field is a large sand field that is almost 100m long, and is divided into three types of sand fields: general sand field, water-smoothed sand field, and white-smoothed sand field for children, so that people of all ages can enjoy it. Inside, there is a climbing rope net installed, making it a paradise for children to explore.
It is a vast space where parents and children can have fun together, play games, and build their physical strength.
Have you eaten?

'Forest Kitchen' is next to Exit 1. It is a restaurant in Hsinchu Zoo and is a brand new white building that creates simplicity and elegance like an art museum.
Through the transparent glass curtains from the floor to the ceiling of the restaurant, you can see the large trees in the atrium and the surrounding street scenery at a glance, and the biggest feature here is that you can enjoy the visual impression of the blue trees and the light and shadows. You can enjoy the scenery while enjoying a light meal. There are llamas, ostriches, and alpacas outside the window, so enjoy your meal with your animal friends.
Let me tell you how to come

If you still have time after seeing all the highlights!

There is also the 'Free Admission Unlimited Tour' insect hall on the 1st basement floor, which is also recommended for parents to visit. There are many books about animal and plant ecology for children to absorb knowledge to their heart's content. The 'Insect Hall', which was renovated from the old Chinese radio station, allows you to observe specimens, breed beetles and small animals, and experience insect and animal interactions, and there are many insects and animals on display. It's free and the content is so rich that it's a shame to miss it!
