Introducing the Facilities!

Exhibition Room A
- This is a space that realistically recreates the old Lake Biwa with geological specimens such as fossil materials.
- In this exhibition room, the past environment of Lake Biwa and its surroundings is recreated based on scientific data, and exhibits that allow you to understand the research process up to the recreation are also on display.
Exhibition Room B
- This is a space where you can feel the footsteps of the ancient people who lived in the diverse nature of Shiga Prefecture, such as the life of the Jomon period, the lifestyle of the waterfront, and the Maruko boat running on the lake, against the backdrop of forests, watersides, lakes, and villages.
- In the experiential exhibition, fun photo spots, and AR corner, you can see Maruko boats and the lakeside scenery of the Edo period on your tablet or smartphone.
Exhibition Room C
- This is a space that melts the scenery of 'Lake Biwa', 'Yoshihara', 'Rice Fields', and 'Rivers and Forests', and the center of the exhibition room displays a large number of biological collections and actual specimens, expressing the diversity and beauty of the creatures that live in Lake Biwa.
Underwater Exhibition Room
- The underwater exhibition room of the Biwa Lake Museum boasts an exhibition area of approximately 2000,60 square meters and is one of the largest freshwater biological exhibitions in Japan.
- The aquatic exhibition room exhibits over 100 species of fish, including almost all types of native fish that live in Lake Biwa and the rivers of Shiga Prefecture.
Discovery Room
- This is a space where children and adults can enjoy experiences and discoveries together. You can learn and experience with your five senses and touch real fossils directly.
Outdoor Exhibition
- This is an exhibition that connects indoor exhibitions and outdoor nature, and as you walk along the tree canopy trail, you can see the vast scenery of Lake Biwa and the flora and fauna of the forest right in front of you.

A Realistic Intellectual Space That Adults Can Also Enjoy

This adult discovery space was newly opened in 2018 and can satisfy the curiosity of adults.
In the exhibition room, you can zoom in on and observe various specimens such as animals including insects and birds, plants, and minerals with a microscope, as well as sketch various animals and plants and read ancient documents that you would not normally have access to.
