This is a hands-on experience of about 1 hour at a chopstick workshop in Gion, right near the Yasaka Pagoda. English-speaking workshop staff guide you step by step, from choosing the wood to the final finish. All the tools and materials you need are provided at the workshop.

Choose the wood you like from 13 types

Pick your favorite from woods ranging from light to dark tones, each with its own color, grain and character. Some woods are included in the base price, and you can upgrade to premium wood for an extra charge. You can also choose a shorter or longer length so the chopsticks fit comfortably in your hand.

Shape with a hand plane, then sand and oil

Place your wood on a stand and carefully shape it with a hand plane. It is a calm, focused process where you can feel the texture and warmth of the wood. Next, sand the surface and edges smooth, then apply natural oil to protect the surface and add a gentle sheen.

Engrave your name for a one-of-a-kind pair

If you like, you can engrave your name in Japanese or your native language. Take your finished chopsticks home as a keepsake of your trip to Kyoto.
