Highlights
This day tour from Sapporo Station covers Asahiyama Zoo, the Shirogane Blue Pond in Biei and Shirahige Falls in one day. At Asahiyama Zoo, Japan's northernmost zoo, you get 100 minutes of free time, and from late December to mid-March you can also see the winter-only penguin walk. Spend 100 minutes with the animals
at Asahiyama Zoo
Meet at Sapporo Station North Exit at 7:50 AM and depart at 8:00. Arrive at Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa around 10:00 AM and explore freely for about 100 minutes. It is Japan's northernmost zoo and home to more than 800 animals.
From late December to mid-March, during the snow season, the zoo holds its penguin walk, where a group of penguins waddles along the visitor path. It usually takes place at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM, and you can see the penguins from about 1 meter away.
Visit the Shirogane Blue Pond in Biei
Around 12:40 PM, arrive at the Shirogane Blue Pond in Biei and spend about 15 minutes there. This man-made pond is linked to the 1988 eruption of Mt. Tokachi, and natural aluminum hydroxide and other minerals give the water shades of turquoise, emerald and cobalt.
See Shirahige Falls flowing like a white beard
Next, spend about 25 minutes at Shirahige Falls. Its soft, abundant streams look like a white beard, which gave the falls their name. In midwinter, the falling water freezes into blue ice.
Stop at Ningle Terrace or
Furano Cheese Factory depending on the season
In winter (December 1 to March 31), drive about 60 minutes to Ningle Terrace and stay for 80 minutes. In other seasons (April 1 to November 30), drive about 50 minutes to the Furano Cheese Factory and visit for 40 minutes. You will arrive back in Sapporo around 6:00 PM.
※ The penguin walk runs only from late December to mid-March.
※ Ningle Terrace is closed November 1–26, and the Furano Cheese Factory is visited instead during this period.
※ Asahiyama Zoo admission is not included and must be paid separately.
