This day tour from Sapporo takes you to Asahiyama Zoo and the highlights around Biei in a single day. At Asahiyama Zoo, Japan's northernmost zoo, you'll meet cold-climate animals such as polar bears and foxes in exhibits that recreate their natural habitats. You'll then stop by the Ken and Mary Tree, Shirahige Falls, the cobalt-blue Shirogane Blue Pond, and Ningle Terrace, a village of craft workshops in the forest. Admission to Asahiyama Zoo and round-trip transportation from Sapporo are included.

Meet the animals of the far north
at Asahiyama Zoo
After a drive of about 2 hours from Sapporo, you'll arrive at Asahiyama Zoo, Japan's northernmost zoo. It is home to cold-climate wildlife and animals native to Hokkaido, and its habitat-style exhibits let you see northern wildlife up close and full of life. Spend about 2 hours exploring at your own pace and meet polar bears, foxes and many other animals.
Pass the Ken and Mary Tree on the hills of Biei

After the zoo, you'll pass the Ken and Mary Tree, a 100-year-old poplar made famous by a classic car commercial. Standing alone on the patchwork hills of Biei, it is a symbol of the area, and your guide will stop briefly at a good photo spot. In winter, you can capture the sunlit snowy hills from the warmth of the vehicle.
Visit Shirahige Falls and the Blue Pond

Shirahige Falls is fed by underground springs that seep through cracks in the rocks and fall like a white beard. The water drops into the blue Biei River, creating a striking contrast with the white spray. In winter, icicles and frost add to the snowy scenery.
Next is the Shirogane Blue Pond, a cobalt-blue pond set in the forest. Aluminum particles in the water reflect sunlight to create its unique blue color. You'll spend about 20 minutes each at the falls and the pond for a walk and photos.
Stroll through Ningle Terrace in the forest

Your last stop is Ningle Terrace, hidden in a dense forest. Small handicraft workshops and elf figures line the wooden boardwalks, and warm lights glowing through the trees create a cozy atmosphere. After about 30 minutes of free time, you'll drive about 2 hours back to the meeting point.
※ The itinerary may change due to bad weather, road conditions or changes in attraction opening hours.
※ If Ningle Terrace is temporarily closed due to weekend/holiday schedule changes or traffic restrictions, the itinerary will be adjusted to another attraction.
※ During the snow season, some attractions may be inaccessible due to traffic, and no refunds are given for missed attractions.
※ Weather, snowy scenery and animal viewing are not guaranteed.
