Quintessence of Tonkin (Tinh Hoa Bac Bo) is a Northern Vietnamese cultural show performed at a lakeside outdoor venue inspired by Thay Pagoda. Water puppetry, traditional music, lighting and natural scenery come together in six scenes that portray Vietnam's history, beliefs and traditions.

The show starts at 7:30 PM, and you can choose from Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers.

When you arrive at the venue, browse the outdoor food stalls and enjoy a variety of local Vietnamese snacks and refreshments. Food is not included in the ticket.

Arriving at least 60 minutes before the show is recommended so you have time to look around.

Discover the founding of Thay Pagoda
and Vietnamese traditions in six scenes

The opening scene, inspired by the poetry of Nguyen Khuyen, depicts rural life in the north, followed by the story of the monk Tu Dao Hanh, who founded Thay Pagoda and is known as the father of water puppetry. You will also see scholars traveling to Thang Long Citadel with cloth bags and bamboo tents to take the imperial exams, and fairies dancing on the lake in a scene inspired by the poetry of Ho Xuan Huong.

After a scene on the worship of the Mother Goddesses, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, the show ends on a lively note with a Quan Ho folk song contest, traditional games and processions.

After the finale, take time to walk around the quiet lakeside venue, take photos and enjoy the atmosphere. The venue is in Quoc Oai, outside central Hanoi, and round-trip transport is not included.
