This is the first special exhibition on The Tale of Genji ever held at the Tokyo National Museum. Written by Murasaki Shikibu in the mid-Heian period about a thousand years ago, The Tale of Genji has been read by many generations and expressed in countless works of art across the ages. The exhibition presents, on an unprecedented scale, the art of The Tale of Genji that spread across many genres, including paintings, calligraphy and crafts, from the Heian period to the Taisho period. On the day of your visit, the same ticket also gives access to the Tohaku Collection Exhibition (regular exhibition).
Held in the Heiseikan of the Tokyo National Museum, this special exhibition brings together paintings and crafts depicting scenes and motifs from The Tale of Genji, manuscripts and commentaries of the text, and expressions that spread into performing arts and popular culture. It is a large-scale exhibition jointly organized by the Kyoto and Tokyo National Museums, and some works will be rotated during the exhibition period.
It is a long tale written in the mid-Heian period, when aristocratic culture flourished, by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting who served Shoshi, daughter of Fujiwara no Michinaga. The troubled life of the hero Hikaru Genji is told with deep, delicate psychology and a refined aesthetic sense, through his romances with women and the rise and fall of court society.
The last ten of the 54 chapters tell the story after Hikaru Genji's death, with his illegitimate son Kaoru as the main character, and are known as the "Uji Chapters." It remains a masterpiece read as a classic to this day.
The exhibition runs from Tuesday, January 19 to Sunday, March 14, 2027. Opening hours are 09:30–17:00, and until 20:00 every Friday and Saturday. Admission is until 30 minutes before closing.
