Depart Fukuoka to explore
Takachiho's gorge and mythical sites
Meet at 8:00 AM at the Lawson by the Chikushi Exit of Hakata Station and board the tour bus. No need to figure out mountain bus routes; about 3 hours later, arrive at your first stop, Takachiho Gorge.
Walk the viewpoint and riverside of Takachiho Gorge

Formed by the volcanic activity of Mt. Aso, Takachiho Gorge is a V-shaped valley where the Gokase River flows between columnar cliffs. For about 30 minutes (11:00-11:30), look out over the deep blue water and the waterfall pouring down the rock face, and walk down to the water's edge for photos. Takachiho Gorge is free to visit.
If you wish, spend about 60 minutes (12:00-13:00) rowing a small boat deep into the gorge, with rock walls rising on both sides and Manai Falls right in front of you. Boat rental is at your own expense.
Ride the Takachiho Amaterasu Railway through the valley

From the gorge, head to the Takachiho Amaterasu Railway, a vintage sightseeing train running through the mountain valley, for about 40 minutes (13:00-13:40). Enjoy forests, streams, and distant ridgelines through the large windows at a leisurely pace.
Train tickets are not included and must be purchased on site (adults 2,000 JPY; prices may vary by season). If the train is unavailable, you will visit Takachiho Shrine instead.
Stack wish stones at Amanoyasukawara

According to legend, when Amaterasu hid in a cave and plunged the world into darkness, the gods gathered at Amanoyasukawara to discuss how to bring her out. Walk down the mountain path past trees and torii gates to a cave-like space surrounded by rocks and forest.
For about 60 minutes (15:00-16:00), see the stacked stones and build your own wish tower. Afterward, ride the bus back to Hakata, arriving around 6:30 PM.
※ The itinerary may change depending on local conditions.
※ Boat rental and train tickets are not included and must be paid on site.
