From Taipei/Taichung: Miaoli Nanzhuang Old Street & Rail Bike Private Tour

Feel the charm of a Hakka town
on Nanzhuang Old Street

Depart from Taipei or Taichung in the morning and drive about 2 hours to Miaoli. Spend about 1.5 hours on Nanzhuang Old Street, also known as Guihua Lane, walking alleys lined with preserved wooden houses and red-brick shops. You can also try traditional Hakka snacks such as lei cha (pounded tea with grains and herbs), mochi, dried persimmons and handmade rice cakes.

Admire fine woodcarving at the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum

Drive about 70 minutes to Sanyi, known as Taiwan's woodcarving capital. Spend about 1 hour at the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum, viewing works ranging from delicate religious statues to modern wooden sculptures that reinterpret traditional motifs.

Ride a rail bike along the Old Mountain Line

Drive about 20 minutes to the Old Mountain Line Rail Bike. Pedal along a historic railway that once carried goods across central Taiwan, passing through tunnels and over bridges. It's a gentle, family-friendly route, and when you emerge from the tunnels, valleys and rivers open up before you. The rail bike and surrounding sightseeing take about 2 hours.

Explore the red-brick arches of the Longteng Bridge ruins

Spend about 30 minutes at the Longteng Bridge ruins, a red-brick railway viaduct built in the early 20th century. It was badly damaged in the great earthquake of 1935 and the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake, but its remaining arches stand against the hills and forest, making it a great photo spot. Afterward, drive about 2 hours back to Taipei or Taichung.
