Stroll through Gion, Kyoto's best-known geisha district, on a 2-hour walk with a local guide. You'll visit three of Kyoto's five hanamachi (geisha districts), Pontocho, Gion Kobu and Gion Higashi, and learn about the history of Gion and the lifestyle and customs of maiko and geiko. The tour also stops at Yasaka Shrine, which gave the Gion district its name. With a maximum of 6 participants, you can ask your guide anything you're curious about Japan and Kyoto.

Start in the alleys of Pontocho
and walk through Kyoto's hanamachi
Meet your guide in front of the Disney Store Shijo Kawaramachi to begin the tour. Over 2 hours you'll walk about 3.3 km and explore three of Kyoto's five hanamachi (geisha districts): Pontocho, Gion Kobu and Gion Higashi.
First, pass through the narrow Pontocho alley and the Pontocho Kaburenjo theater before heading out to the Kamo River. Along the way past the Yaji-san and Kita-san statue, Sanjo Ohashi Bridge and Yamato-oji Street, your guide explains historic spots in downtown Kyoto that are easy to miss.
Wander the traditional streets of Gion Shirakawa

Walk along Gion Shinbashi Street and Gion Shirakawa, lined with wooden machiya townhouses. In the northern part of Gion Kobu, a national historic preservation district, hear about the history of the hanamachi and the lifestyle, customs and daily life of maiko and geiko (geisha). You'll also see Tatsumi Shrine and Tatsumi Bridge.
Pass through Gion Higashi and finish at Yasaka Shrine

After Gion Higashi, visit Yasaka Shrine, once called Gion Shrine and the origin of the Gion name. Time permitting, your guide will also explain the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's three great festivals. Both the shrine and the festival have a history of more than 1,100 years. The 9:45 and 12:30 tours may include a free visit to the "Gion Gallery" if you wish to extend the tour.
※ Hanamikoji Street is not included in the itinerary.
※ Sightings of maiko or geiko (geisha) are not guaranteed.
※ During cherry blossom season (late March to early April), the route changes slightly so you can enjoy the blossoms.
