At Heping Island Park, northeast of Keelung Port in Taiwan, see rock formations and sea erosion platforms shaped by long-term weathering and waves. Ten uniquely shaped rocks, such as Pig Head Rock and Sphinx Rock, line the coast along with mushroom rocks and tofu rocks. Take in Keelung Islet and the sea from the viewpoints along the roughly 400 m trail, then relax at the Blue Sea Pool filled with clear seawater and at Liuxia Beach. Depending on the option, you can add the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology theme hall or the i OCEAN Smart Aquarium.
Heping Island, formerly known as Sheliao Island, is located in Zhongzheng District, northeast of Keelung Port. It is the first place in northern Taiwan where Westerners set foot and the first place where Han Chinese settled in Keelung. Long-term weathering and wave erosion created unique landforms along the coast, such as mushroom rocks, tofu rocks and sea erosion platforms, like a sculpture gallery. Look for ten specially shaped rocks: Pig Head Rock, Sphinx Rock, Seal Rock, Mudskipper Rock and Sea Hare Rock, plus Diamond Rock, Pharaoh Rock, Crocodile Tears Rock, Black Kite Rock and Leopard Rock in the secret Alabao Bay.
The trail, about 400 m in total, runs along the heights of Heping Island GeoPark with panoramic views. From the Dengyu Pavilion you can see Keelung Islet and the sea.
The vast sea erosion platform is where seaweed grows in winter, and local village women often come to gather it, creating a scene unique to the island. The soft, clean Liuxia Beach is great for children to play in the sand or for sunbathing.
At the Blue Sea Pool, a clear seawater pool, you can often see tropical fish, crabs and other marine life, with lifeguards on duty all year. The Water Pool lets children observe small fish up close. The Angel's Trail to the Sea, which seems to lead into the blue sea, is a popular photo spot, and a slide leads straight down to Liuxia Beach.
The Ryukyu people who settled here in 1905 taught the people of Keelung fishing and shipbuilding techniques, and a monument commemorates this. A former military facility at the highest point of the park has been turned into a restaurant with an outdoor plaza offering 270-degree sea views and indoor seating.
