This museum park occupies the Railway Department of the Taiwan Governor-General's Office, a national historic site that was once home to the Qing-era Taipei Machinery Bureau and Taiwan's first modern train repair industrial park. You can explore six nationally designated historic buildings from the Japanese colonial period, including the red-brick main office completed in 1920, the cafeteria, the octagonal building, the power supply room, the engineering office and the wartime command center (air-raid shelter). The Railway Department historic relics exhibition uses themed galleries, digital guides and items found during dismantling investigations to show the history and restoration of the buildings up close.
The Railway Department of the Taiwan Governor-General's Office, a national historic site, stands on the former site of the Qing-era Taipei Machinery Bureau. It was Taiwan's first modern train repair industrial park and later became the administrative center for Taiwan's railway transportation. After Taipei New Station was completed in 1989, the Taiwan Railway Administration moved out and the space was left vacant. Since 2006, the National Taiwan Museum and the Taiwan Railway Administration have worked together to turn it into a museum park.
The park has six nationally designated historic buildings: the main office, cafeteria, octagonal building, power supply room, engineering office and wartime command center (air-raid shelter), all built during the Japanese colonial period. The main office, completed in 1920, has a half-timbered structure with brick below and timber above, built largely of Alishan cypress, and a Queen Anne Revival exterior of red brick and white imitation stone. Together with the octagonal building, it is a representative later work in Taiwan of Matsunosuke Moriyama, a technician of the Construction Division of the Taiwan Governor-General's Office.
The Railway Department historic relics exhibition features four themed galleries, six digital guides and 20 on-site displays from dismantling investigations, showing the history and architectural features of the Railway Department. Following the restoration records, you can get a glimpse of the craftsmen, techniques and considerations behind the restoration.
