Opened in November 2000, this is Taiwan's first museum dedicated to ceramics, investigating, collecting and preserving Taiwanese ceramic culture and carrying it forward through research, exhibitions and education. Natural light pours into the building of exposed concrete, steel and wide glass curtain walls, and a large water wall and pool greet you at the top of the stone entrance steps. The second-floor permanent exhibition presents the development of Taiwanese ceramics in five themes using exhibits, videos and interactive technology, and you can also visit the third-floor special exhibition room and the basement ceramics workshop and children's experience room.
The New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum officially opened on November 26, 2000 as Taiwan's first professional museum dedicated to ceramics. Based on the investigation, collection and preservation of Taiwanese ceramic culture, it carries out research, archiving, exhibitions and education, and promotes international exchange through artist residencies, membership in the International Council of Museums and sister museum partnerships with museums in Germany and Spain.
The building has a gray exterior of exposed concrete and steel, with high ceilings and extensive glass curtain walls. Sunlight filters in layer by layer through the exposed concrete, washed stone walls, gray stone and tan wood, and at the top of the stone entrance steps you are greeted by the sound and view of a large water wall and pool.
The first floor houses a ceramics cultural merchandise store, an information desk, a ceramics stage, permanent exhibitions and a special exhibition room, with performances and hands-on activities held from time to time. The second-floor permanent exhibition presents the development of Taiwanese ceramics in five themes, "Transformation from Clay," "Reflections on Our Origins," "Pottery Town," "Journey Through Time" and "Future Prophecy," using exhibits, graphics, videos and interactive technology. The third-floor special exhibition room hosts several special exhibitions each year.
Basement level 1 houses the Information Center, International Lecture Hall, Children's Experience Room, Ceramics Gallery and a restaurant, and basement level 2 houses the Ceramics Workshop. You can see small themed exhibitions by ceramic artists and groups from around the world, and hands-on pottery classes are held for ages four and above. The Information Center is a specialized library with books and audio-visual materials on ceramics, art and museums (not available for loan). The restaurant offers 152 seats for meals and drinks.
