Wear a kimono and enjoy an authentic tea ceremony at Maikoya in Karasuma-Shijo, Kyoto. With help from the staff, choose and put on your favorite kimono, then learn about the history, utensils, and etiquette of the tea ceremony in English from a skilled tea master. Whisk your own matcha with premium matcha powder and taste wagashi whose flavor and design change with the seasons. If sitting on tatami is difficult, chairs are available on request in advance.

Choose a kimono
and begin your tea ceremony
The experience begins with choosing a beautiful kimono. Staff will help you dress in a look that suits the tea ceremony, and women with long hair can also have their hair styled.
Learn the history and etiquette in a traditional tea room

Enter a traditional tea room where the tea utensils are carefully arranged. Sitting on tatami is customary, but chairs are available on request. A skilled tea master demonstrates each step of preparing tea and explains the history, utensils, and etiquette of the ceremony. Throughout the experience, you will also learn about the Zen principles behind it: wa (harmony), kei (respect), sei (purity), and jaku (tranquility).
Taste your own matcha with wagashi

Whisk your own bowl of matcha using premium matcha powder. You can also enjoy wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets whose flavor, color, and design change with the seasons.
