Founded in 1983, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum is Taiwan's first public art museum. Dedicated to preserving, researching and popularizing modern and contemporary Taiwanese art, it documents nearly 100 years of Taiwanese art history while keeping a close eye on contemporary art.
Designed by architect Kao Er-pan, the museum stands in the Yuanshan area on the banks of the Keelung River. The minimalist gray-and-white building embodies the spirit of the Chinese courtyard house, and its cantilevered corridors, inspired by traditional bracket sets, form a "well"-shaped main structure. Inside are a bright, spacious lobby lit through glass curtain walls, exhibition spaces on three floors above ground and one basement level, and an atrium with green space that draws in natural light.
The museum hosts biennials combining Taiwanese and global perspectives, open calls, thematic exhibitions and traveling exchange exhibitions. It also runs learning programs tailored to different ages and audiences, including lectures, seminars, guided tours, on-site exhibition dialogues and workshops.
