This small-group day trip takes you out of Paris to two of the most important châteaux in French history. Travel by air-conditioned minibus with an English-speaking guide, first to Vaux-le-Vicomte, which inspired Louis XIV to build the Palace of Versailles, and its 99-acre French formal gardens. Then visit the Château de Fontainebleau, home to kings and emperors for more than seven centuries with over 1,500 rooms, and see Napoleon Bonaparte's throne. Admission to both châteaux and audio guides are included.

At 8:30 AM, meet your driver-guide in front of Café La Flamme on Avenue de Wagram near the Arc de Triomphe and board the grey minibus. Listen to stories of French history from your guide during the roughly 50-minute drive to the first château.

Spend about 2 hours 15 minutes at Vaux-le-Vicomte, with its luxurious 17th-century interiors and outstanding French formal gardens. It was so beautiful that the Sun King, Louis XIV, had the Palace of Versailles built to rival it. Hear about the history of the estate and its former owners, and use your free time to explore the interior or stroll the immaculate 99-acre gardens.

After a drive of about 35 minutes by minibus, enjoy a 1-hour lunch break in the town of Fontainebleau. Meals are not included and are at your own expense.

Spend about 2 hours at the Château de Fontainebleau, residence of kings from three dynasties, a pope and two French emperors. Called by Napoleon "the true home of kings, the house of the ages," it features grand halls, lavishly gilded rooms, a beautiful chapel and Napoleon's throne. Afterwards, return to the starting point by minibus in about 50 minutes.
