Take a break at the Forest Kitchen inside the zoo and enjoy a relaxed visit with your family.
Hsinchu Zoo opened in 1936 and is guided by three core values: animal-friendly design, preserving history and education. Its cage-free, animal-friendly exhibits give each animal 1.5 times more space. Historic features such as old trees and the Elephant Gate have been preserved, creating a familiar yet fresh experience, and the zoo also serves as a venue for experiential learning.
The Elephant Gate was built by a Japanese designer with reference to the gate of Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Germany. The Elephant Gate, Lele the hippo, the Bengal tiger's new home, the large aviary and the Forest Kitchen are considered the zoo's five most popular attractions.
Lele the hippo is the star of Hsinchu Zoo. You can also see greater flamingos with their tall stature and white and light pink wings, ostriches (the largest bird on earth), Taiwan macaques (a wild primate unique to Taiwan) and blackbelly sheep, a breed crossed from African short-wool sheep and European wool sheep.
Located next to Exit 1, the Forest Kitchen is a family-friendly restaurant inside the zoo. Its brand-new, pure white building has the clean, elegant feel of an art gallery.
