At the Forbidden City, home to 24 Ming and Qing emperors for nearly 500 years, walk along the grand central axis past the Hall of Supreme Harmony and other ceremonial halls, then explore the inner court where emperors, empresses and concubines lived. Head to the Temple of Heaven, where emperors prayed for good harvests, and spend about an hour strolling the cypress-lined grounds. Stand before the Circular Mound Altar to learn how circles and squares reflect the ancient belief that heaven is round and the earth is square, and admire the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.

Enjoy lunch and walk the Long Corridor at the Summer Palace

Before the final stop, relax over lunch at a local restaurant for about an hour. Lunch is included on private tours; on the small-group tour it is at your own expense, and your guide will recommend a good place nearby.

End the day at the Summer Palace, China's most famous imperial garden, where you spend about 100 minutes enjoying views of Longevity Hill across Kunming Lake and walking the Long Corridor decorated with more than 14,000 hand-painted pictures.
