Travel from La Paz to Uyuni by overnight bus, then spend three days exploring the Uyuni Salt Flat and Bolivia's Altiplano by 4WD vehicle. See the endless white salt flat, Incahuasi Island with its giant cacti, and colorful highland lagoons where flamingos gather. The route continues to the geothermal field of Sol de Mañana, the Polques hot springs and the Green Lagoon below Licancabur Volcano. With the overnight bus, two nights' lodging and most meals included in a small group of up to 16 people, there is less to arrange for this long journey.
On the departure day, check in at the bus office in La Paz around 9:00 p.m. and board the overnight bus to Uyuni at 9:30 p.m. The bus has heated reclining seats and a restroom, and pillows and microfiber blankets are provided.
Arrive in Uyuni around 7:30 a.m. the next day and meet the staff at the bus office. After a short rest at a nearby café, check in at the office and get a short briefing on the trip from your driver and guide.
Depart at 10:30 a.m. to visit the Train Cemetery with Bolivia's early steam locomotives, then see traditional salt processing and crafts made of salt, alpaca and llama wool in Colchani village. Head deep into the salt flat to stop at the Ojos de Sal, Playa Blanca, the Salt Hotel Museum, the Flags of the World and the Dakar Monument.
Enjoy panoramic views on Incahuasi Island, famous for its giant cacti and ancient coral formations, and take perspective photos against the white horizon. At sunset, enjoy wine and snacks as the salt flat changes color, then have dinner and stay overnight at a salt hostel in Atulcha.
After breakfast, cross the Chiguana Desert surrounded by colorful mountains and take a short break at a viewpoint overlooking Ollagüe Volcano. At the Cañapa, Hedionda and Chiarkota lagoons, you can see flamingos gathering in the mineral-rich waters.
Enter the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve and cross the Siloli Desert to stop at the Stone Tree (Árbol de Piedra), shaped by wind and erosion. End the day at Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon), known for its reddish water, then have dinner and stay overnight at a mountain hostel in Huayllajara or Polques.
On the last day, leave before dawn for Sol de Mañana at nearly 5,000 m above sea level. Explore the steaming fumaroles and bubbling mud pools, then relax in the natural hot springs of Polques.
Pass through the surreal landscape of the Dalí Desert and admire the Green and White Lagoons below Licancabur Volcano. Then cross the Altiplano back to Uyuni, where the tour ends around 5–6 p.m.
