This day tour from Tokyo shows you both the southern and northern sides of Mt. Fuji in a single day. In Hakone to the south, stop at the shore of Lake Ashi and ride the Hakone Ropeway up to Owakudani, where sulfur steam rises and you can try the famous black eggs. To the north, stroll around Oshino Hakkai with its springs fed by Mt. Fuji's snowmelt and admire the Chureito Pagoda against Mt. Fuji at Arakurayama Sengen Park. A Hakone Ropeway ticket is included for a limited time, with comfortable round-trip transportation.
Depart from Tokyo Station (7:30 AM) or Shinjuku (8:00 AM) and head to Hakone in an air-conditioned vehicle. An English- and Chinese-speaking guide accompanies you to Lake Ashi, the Hakone Ropeway and Owakudani, then on to Oshino Hakkai and Arakurayama Sengen Park on the north side of Mt. Fuji.
Take a short break and photos on the shore of Lake Ashi, formed by volcanic activity about 400,000 years ago. If you wish, you can pay extra to cross the lake on the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (pirate ship); on clear days Mt. Fuji and the red torii of Hakone Shrine appear on the horizon. Then ride the Hakone Ropeway over the active volcanic valley, looking down on Lake Ashi and Mt. Fuji.
At Owakudani, see sulfur steam rising from rock crevices and the volcanic terrain up close. You can also try the black eggs (kurotamago), said to add seven years to your life.
This village gathers eight clear springs, fed by Mt. Fuji's snowmelt that seeps slowly through volcanic rock. Stroll past the ponds, from the mirror-like Okama Pond to deep blue pools.
Climb about 400 steps for the view of the five-story Chureito Pagoda with Mt. Fuji behind it. You also stop at Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine, and can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, autumn leaves in fall and snow-capped Mt. Fuji in winter. After the tour, return to Tokyo by vehicle.
※ Mt. Fuji may not be visible depending on the weather.
