From Fukuoka: Takachiho Gorge Manai Falls & Mt. Aso and Kusasenri Day Tour

volcanoes, grasslands, and a gorge in one day

Meet at the Lawson store in Hotel Oriental Fukuoka near Hakata Station and board the tour bus into the heart of Kyushu's nature. You will visit Mt. Aso, Kusasenri, and Takachiho Gorge, and the ride to Mt. Aso takes about 3 hours.

Feel the volcanic landscape of the Mt. Aso crater

Spend about 30 minutes at Mt. Aso, one of Japan's most active volcanoes. From the observation area, look out over the smoking crater and feel the power of the volcanic terrain.

Due to a recent helicopter accident at Mt. Aso, traffic in the area is currently restricted and the mountain can only be viewed from a distance. The guide will adjust the visit time depending on conditions.

Walk the Kusasenri grassland and visit the Aso Volcano Museum

You can choose to visit the Aso Volcano Museum (extra cost) to learn how volcanoes form and erupt. Then head to Kusasenri and spend about 40 minutes strolling across the vast green grassland with the volcano as a backdrop. You can also buy a light meal at your own expense and relax.

See Manai Falls in Takachiho Gorge by boat or on foot

After about 1.5 hours by bus, arrive at Takachiho Gorge, lined with basalt cliffs formed by ancient volcanic eruptions, with Manai Falls dropping into the center. Spend about 60 minutes exploring Manai Falls, the boat pier, and the gorge trail.

With the boat option, ride a hand-rowed boat to see the falls up close. Each boat holds up to 3 people and is assigned per family; solo travelers share a boat with other guests. With the walking option, enjoy the scenery along the gorge trail. Afterward, ride the bus for about 2 hours 40 minutes back to Fukuoka.
