Depart Fukuoka and explore
Kyushu's volcanoes, grasslands and gorges in one day
At 7:50 AM, meet your guide in front of the Lawson Fukuoka Oriental Hotel store near Hakata Station and set off by coach. This day tour visits Mt. Aso, Kusasenri and Takachiho Gorge in turn as you discover Kyushu's nature with your guide.
You can choose between a package that includes the Takachiho Gorge boat ride and a hiking package to explore the gorge on foot.
Look out over the Nakadake Crater area of Mt. Aso
After about 3 hours by coach, arrive at Mt. Aso, one of Japan's best-known active volcanoes, and stay for about 30 minutes. Take in the volcanic landscape around the smoking Nakadake Crater.
Due to a recent helicopter accident on Mt. Aso, traffic restrictions currently apply in the area, so Mt. Aso can only be viewed from a distance. Your guide will adjust the visit time according to conditions on site.
Stroll the Kusasenri meadow and have lunch
A 20-minute drive brings you to Kusasenri, a wide grassland where you have about 1 hour of free time. Walk along the trails or enjoy paid horse riding, and have lunch (at your own expense) here with a view of the meadow.
Explore Takachiho Gorge by boat or on foot
After about 1 hour 30 minutes by coach, arrive at Takachiho Gorge and stay for about 1 hour. If you chose the boat option, board a traditional rowboat and glide along the narrow waterway between basalt cliffs toward the waterfall. Each boat holds up to 3 people, so solo travelers share a boat with other guests.
If you chose the hiking package, walk along the stone steps to explore the gorge. The round-trip walk takes about 30 minutes. After sightseeing, return to Fukuoka in about 2 hours 45 minutes by coach.
