In the morning, you are picked up from your hotel in central Beijing and drive 1.5 to 2 hours to the Great Wall in an air-conditioned private vehicle. On this private tour for your group only, you hike the unrestored Jiankou section and continue along the ridge to Mutianyu, seeing two faces of the Great Wall in one day.

Hike the unrestored Jiankou section

Jiankou, meaning “arrow nock,” stands apart from other sections because it was built with white dolomite. It has never been restored, so you walk past crumbling watchtowers, steep ridges without railings, and wild plants left by centuries of weathering. Your guide sets the pace to suit your fitness and the day’s weather and puts your safety first on exposed stretches. The hike lasts about 4 to 5 hours and is moderate to challenging, with uneven stone steps and some steep sections.

and toboggan down from Mutianyu
