This day tour takes you by tour bus from Hakata Station in Fukuoka to three top sights in Kitakyushu in one day. Enjoy views of the Kanmon Strait in the Mojiko Retro district, lined with Western-style buildings from the Meiji and early Showa eras, then explore Kokura Castle, first built in 1602, and its garden. Finally, visit Miyajidake Shrine, known for Japan's largest shimenawa (sacred rope). Free time at each stop lets you explore at your own pace.
Meet at 8:30 AM in front of Lawson Fukuoka Oriental Hotel at the Hakata Station exit and depart in an air-conditioned tour bus. The tour runs as a group tour of up to 45 people, with the guide speaking English, Chinese and Japanese. After visiting Mojiko Retro, Kokura Castle and Miyajidake Shrine in turn, you return to the meeting point.
After about 1.5 hours by bus, arrive at the Mojiko Retro district, once a thriving international trading port. Explore freely for about 3 hours along streets lined with buildings from the Meiji to early Showa eras. You can also see Western-style buildings such as the former Osaka Shosen Building, the former Moji Customs Building and the former Moji Mitsui Club.
You can also stop by Kaikyo Plaza, a seaside shopping and dining complex overlooking the Kanmon Strait, and the Mojiko Retro view and souvenir hall (Minatoya), which sells local specialties and seafood.
Next, head to Kokura Castle, first built by Hosokawa Tadaoki in 1602, and stay for about 1.5 hours. Walk the castle grounds and admire its distinctive Chinese-style gables, and visit the nearby Yasaka Shrine and the Kokura Castle Garden, a restored Edo-period daimyo residence. Entry to the castle interior and similar costs extra.
The last stop is Miyajidake Shrine, the head shrine of all Miyajidake shrines in Japan. Founded about 1,700 years ago and dedicated to Empress Jingu, it holds Japan's longest shimenawa. It is also famous for the "Path of Light (Hikari no Michi)," when the setting sun aligns with the approach to the shrine. After about 1 hour there, you return to Hakata.
※ From mid-April to early May, Kawachi Fujien Wisteria Garden is visited instead of Miyajidake Shrine.
※ Visit times may be shortened or the itinerary changed due to bad weather, traffic, or congestion during public holidays and peak seasons.
