This day tour from Hakata, Fukuoka, lets you experience Kyushu's volcano, grassland, shrine and hot springs all in one day. See the vast caldera of the active Mt. Aso up close, then walk the neighboring Kusasenri grassland. In the afternoon, visit Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine with its mossy stone steps lined with lanterns, and finish by relaxing in the traditional hot-spring village of Kurokawa Onsen. You can also taste onsen tamago cooked by geothermal heat.

Explore active Mt. Aso
and the Kusasenri grassland
Depart from Lawson near Hakata Station and reach Mt. Aso after about 2.5 hours by bus. Stand at the edge of the huge caldera to admire the volcanic scenery, then move to the neighboring Kusasenri to stroll the vast grassland. Lush green in spring and summer and starkly beautiful in autumn and winter, it is great for photos. Generous free time is given at Mt. Aso and Kusasenri.
Mystical Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine in the forest
Spend about 40 minutes at Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, deep in the forest. Climb the mossy stone steps lined with hundreds of lanterns into a quiet atmosphere surrounded by old trees. It is known as a setting for the anime 'Hotarubi no Mori e'.
End the day at Kurokawa Onsen
Finally, enjoy about 100 minutes of free time in Kurokawa Onsen, a hot-spring village with over a century of history. Taste onsen tamago slowly cooked by geothermal heat, and if you like, use the 'Nyuto Tegata' pass to try several open-air baths or relax in a riverside hot spring (bath fees extra). Return to Hakata by bus in the evening.
