Highlights
This winter-only day tour of northern Kyoto departs from Osaka (Dotonbori) or Kyoto Station. Take the Ine Bay sightseeing boat past more than 230 funaya boathouses preserved since the Edo period, and ride the cable car or monorail up to Amanohashidate View Land for the famous "Hiryukan" (flying dragon) view. After sunset, enjoy the winter-only illumination of the thatched-roof village of Miyama Kayabuki no Sato. Boat and cable car/monorail tickets are included, and a Chinese/English/Japanese guide accompanies you.

See the funaya from the sea
on the Ine Bay boat
Depart at 9:30 from in front of Kani Doraku East in Dotonbori, Osaka, or from the Hachijo exit bus parking lot at Kyoto Station. Board the Ine Bay sightseeing boat and pass more than 230 funaya, two-story houses with a boat garage below and living space above. Preserved since the Edo period, it is the only fishing village of its kind in Japan (about 40 minutes from Osaka, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Kyoto).
Amanohashidate View Land
Ride the cable car or monorail up to the Hiryukan viewpoint. Bend over and look between your legs, and the 3.6 km sandbar across Miyazu Bay looks like a flying dragon. You stay about 1 hour 50 minutes.
Miyama Kayabuki no Sato winter illumination
Spend about 1 hour 30 minutes at Miyama Kayabuki no Sato, one of Japan's three great thatched-roof villages. At dusk, about 38 traditional houses, some over 200 years old, are lit up. The illumination is held only in winter, so dress warmly and wear shoes suitable for snow. Arrive back at your departure point (Dotonbori or Kyoto Station) around 20:30.
